Getting Started

We first tested MetroFax back in February of 2010. We loved everything about it—everything except for the setup fee. Now, MetroFax has dropped the fee and given the interface a polish, while updating functionality.

MetroFax's sign-up process was effortless. We were up and running in no time. You don't get to choose your number, but MetroFax supplies you with a local one based on your area code. You can also choose a toll-free number which is $2.00 extra per month.

User Interface

Everything about MetroFax is easy and well-implemented. MetroFax does not have dedicated faxing software, but it does offer downloads that will add fax drivers to your print utility. There's also a plug-in for Microsoft Outlook. If you don't require the markup tools offered by Ring Central or eFax, you should get along fine with these options. As with all the services we reviewed, you can send faxes by email. MetroFax has recently added a number of new features to its offering including SMS notifications for your cell phone, advanced customization of fax retry attempts, and improved personalization features. They'll also store your faxes online for 90 days.

The interface got a makeover, though we thought it was pretty good to begin with. It's still one of the nicest looking and most intuitive interfaces that we've used with any service. Faxing performance is excellent too. On average, faxes sent from MetroFax arrived in 1 minute and 30 seconds. It also had the fastest reception time, averaging in at 50 seconds. If you want to look at your faxes on-the-go, there is a great-looking mobile app as well.

Pricing

Metrofax's Essential plan is meant to compete with Nextiva and Ring Central with its 500 pages and price of $6.63 per month. The Value plan, however, is the clear choice for those who want to fax a lot. While the monthly cost is a little above average at $10.79 per month, you get 1000 pages that you can use for sending or receiving. These prices reflect the annual plans which save customers about $2.00 per month. Additional faxes are only 3 cents per page, among the lowest we've found.

Conclusion

Overall, Metrofax has a winning look and feel and enough free faxes to get you through the month. There's also a 30-day free trial, giving you a free month of service and an easy way to see if it works well for you.
